FAES Foundation Board of Trustees, after the request of its President, José María Aznar, have decided by unanimity to award Luis Almagro, Secretary General of the Organization of American States, OAS, with the FAES Freedom Award. FAES recognizes his firmly defense of democratic values in Latin America and his support to the democratic political forces in Venezuela in order to reestablish the rule of law, public liberties and representative institutions.
The Islamic Republic of Iran has refined the art of blaming on its external enemies the internal dissatisfaction. Nevertheless, the origin of the last protests lies on the attempt of the ultraconservative clergy to damage and discredit President Rohaní. What started as a manipulation of the streets inside the framework of the typical fight of the elite of the country transformed into a massive and widespread movement of protests. Surely, the learned lection is that in a future it would be better to settle accounts behind the scenes rather than involving the streets.

La Fundación FAES ha celebrado su Programa de Formación de Líderes Iberoamericanos 2017, en el que han participado 25 jóvenes de 17 países de la región. El Programa pretende fomentar el conocimiento del sistema político, institucional y económico español y la formación en liderazgo, y propiciar el intercambio de ideas a través de conferencias, coloquios y talleres formativos impartidos por expertos colaboradores de FAES. Los alumnos han sido recibidos por el director de la Fundación, Javier Zarzalejos, y han mantenido un encuentro con el expresidente del Gobierno y presidente de FAES, José María Aznar.
Los diez años de Gobierno de Hugo Chávez han significado un grave retroceso en la vida social de los venezolanos. Venezuela se ha convertido en uno de los países con mayor índice de criminalidad del mundo. El poder judicial ha resultado seriamente contaminado por el poder ejecutivo. La economía ha sido intervenida y dañada a pesar de la riqueza en petróleo del país. Las libertades ciudadanas y democráticas han resultado alteradas y recortadas en beneficio del poder omnímodo de Chávez y de su movimiento bolivariano. Los grupos de oposición han sido amenazados, boicoteados o expulsados de la escena pública y política. Lo mismo ha ocurrido con los medios de comunicación disidentes. Venezuela cuenta hoy con un régimen arbitrario que debe ser vencido democráticamente.
