More than four months have elapsed since CDU/CSU and SPD formed a coalition in Germany. This time, the aim was to avoid the errors made by both parties in the previous coalition of 2005-2009, after Gerhard Schröder’s defeat and the election of Angela Merkel as Chancellor. The result of said coalition was not satisfactory to either party, but was especially harmful to SPD. The Social Democratic Party decreased by more than 11 points in the following 2009 election and CDU/CSU had to form a coalition with the Liberals to continue in office.
One year after the death of the “Iron Lady”, it seems mandatory to make some comments on her figure and her political leadership. Margaret Thatcher was a world-renowned stateswoman. This is not only due to her three election victories (1979, 1983 and 1987), but also to the loyalty she always showed to her principles, specially to her unconditional defence of freedom, to which she linked a disused concept (then and now): responsibility.
On 7 April, Quebec’s electorate was called to the ballot box to choose its new provincial parliament. The previous Premier, sovereignist Pauline Marois, called early elections, not having a solid majority to govern. The election results have confirmed the trend detected over the election campaign: victory of the Liberal Party with a comfortable absolute majority (70 seats out of 125, 41.5% of the votes), thus recovering the provincial government which it had lost in the previous elections of 4 September 2012, after 9 years in office.
While the final result of the French local elections, held on 23 and 30 March, seems broadly clear, a more detailed analysis reveals that all political forces are still showing internal weaknesses. The first of said weaknesses has been the continuous fall in electoral participation, of almost 2 points, from 65.2% to 63.4%. Refusal to vote has not been the newest factor in these elections, but it has risen.
