Spain is a great nation, a pluralistic nation with a history of centuries of people living alongside one another and strong national links that hold the country together. In Spain today constitutional stability guarantees freedom and an environment in which people can coexist alongside one other. The concept of a joined-up nation is compatible with the constitutional configuration of a State made up of Regional Governments. The main focuses of the studies that FAES undertakes are the preservation of this constitutional framework as a guarantee of freedom, equality and coexistence, and the strengthening of the institutions of the State of Law. The Foundation upholds the constitutional framework and the great 1978 Transition pact as key to preserving Spain"s unity. Equally, it advocates that the institutions of a State of Law should be strengthened. FAES therefore devotes a good part of its work to analysing the currents of opinion and movements that threaten or weaken the framework for coexistence that derives from the Constitution. FAES also studies ideas and projects relating to the institutions that are at the heart of the State: Justice, the Civil Service, the Regional Governments, Local Authorities etc. Citizen safety is another issue that the Foundation studies, bearing in mind that individual freedom includes as fundamental rights the defence of life and of private property against attackers and criminals.
