Cayetana ?lvarez de Toledo, the first day of the FAES Campus Central America & the Caribbean Let us value our ideas because they have propelled the advance of civilisation "The road to freedom and, therefore, to prosperity as well, is set by the law" Hirschfeld: "Freedom of speech and independent justice are the best antidotes against the authoritarian threat" Madrid, 17.09.12.- the Director of FAES International department, Cayetana ?lvarez de Toledo, has opened the first edition of the FAES Campus Central America & the Caribbean, at the renowned university Francisco Marroqu?n of Guatemala, and which will take place until Wednesday 19. At the event opening the sessions, ?lvarez de Toledo stated Let us value our ideas because they have propelled the advance of civilisation. Let us assume our responsibility because it's the only way we can face challenges ahead. And let us work more than ever together, joining the like-minded and creating new affinities to sow a future of freedom, security and prosperity for all, she declared before an audience of politicians, scholars, journalists and students. ?lvarez de Toledo added that We must cooperate in the search of solutions to shared problems and to strengthen the values that distinguish those of us who consider ourselves to be Western. During her next address, at a round table called 'Security: a Requirement for Freedom', the Director of FAES International department stated that a good security policy is based on two essential ideas or premises: the first is that what's moral is also effective. The second is that the road to freedom and, therefore, to prosperity as well, is set by the law. Massive-scale and organised terrorism and crime are, by definition, a stand-off with the State. Holding out is essential. If you hold the stand-off out you have the possibility of winning the battle against terrorism; if you don't, you will cause your own defeat, ?lvarez de Toledo stressed. Also participating in the first day of the FAES Campus Central America & the Caribbean was the FAES Coordinator of Latin American Programmes, Guillermo Hirschfeld, who stated that There's no democracy without freedom, because they are intertwined as an indissoluble link; they are the two sides of the same coin. At a table on Sound Institutions, Stable Democracies, Hirschfeld declared that Freedom of speech and independent justice are the best antidotes against the authoritarian threat and added that We must watch out for new models which use democracy's tools to empty it from within, like a Trojan horse.
