The former Prime Minister of Spain and president of FAES Foundation, José María Aznar, launched, along with the former Minister Josep Piqué and the former secretary-general of CCOO José María Fidalgo, the second part of his memoirs, El compromiso del poder.
During his presentation, Aznar said: "In all my actions and policy decisions my only interest was to serve the general interest of Spain and the Spanish people. That remains being my commitment, I have assumed it my entire life and it will continue being so all my life. And there will be spaces for success and for bitterness, but the most important thing is that Spain's interest prevails over any selfish, petty, particular and contrary interest."
According to him, "kicking the table of constitutional consensus is neither sustainable nor acceptable and will entail tears and obvious problems if it is not stopped and cut out: it must be stopped, it must be cut out, and it must be defeated with all its consequences". "Restoring the value of the pillars of the Transition is one of the most important tasks that lie ahead," he added.
Aznar also stated: "It is very important that the institutions in Spain work well and it should be one of our concerns. At a time when politics and politicians are so reviled, politics is more important than ever. Sometimes we may think that not enough politics are made and by not doing this certain things happen, like politicians giving up their area of responsibility and decision-making, and so this area is occupied by other powers. And thus we see how other powers, for example in the field of justice, make decisions that have an obvious political content. And that's not good for the proper operating order of our institutions."
In his opinion, "we have to be careful of not losing what we have earned and won. The law allows no exceptions. The law cannot be applied on a whim, it must always be enforced, that is the effective guarantee of the Rule of Law."
