“I believe His Majesty the King of Spain’s decision to abdicate should be interpreted as a conclusive demonstration of his desire to do in each occasion what is most suitable for the interests of Spain, of our democratic system and of the Monarchy.
The succession to the throne corroborates the institutional significance of the Crown as a guarantee of the continuity and stability of the Spanish Constitutional system.
King Juan Carlos holds one of the most outstanding track records in the history of the Spanish Monarchy. The King’s impetus was decisive for the reconciliation of Spaniards in democracy and for Spain’s articulation as a national reality.
His decision to abdicate is an act of responsibility and generosity.
When assessing the historical figure of King Juan Carlos, we must recognize not only all he has done, but also the importance of the Crown for the present and future of Spain.
The Prince of Asturias will now assume the condition of symbol of the unity and permanence of the State bestowed on the King by our Constitution. I am certain that the continuity of the Spanish Nation and the strength of our democratic system will find in Don Felipe as solid a guarantee as they found in his father.
Finally, I wish to reassert my adherence to the Crown and to express my personal and loyal support to the Prince of Asturias”.
