The former president of the Government and president of the FAES Foundation, José María Aznar, sent a condolence telegram to the daughters of Ana María Vidal-Abarca, co-founder of the Association of Victims of Terrorism, to convey his deepest condolences on the passing of their mother. In the telegram, he emphasized that “she was an exceptional Spaniard: courageous, free and tenacious” who “never accepted the silence imposed by ETA's barbarity and who enabled an increasing number of people to spoke out for Spain and for freedom”. He also recalled “her committed and lucid upholding of the Constitution” and stated that we, all democrats, “owe her an inestimable debt of gratitude”.
The content of the telegram is reproduced here below:
“It is with painful emotion that I receive the news of the passing of your mother. Ana María was an exceptional Spaniard: courageous, free and tenacious. She never accepted ETA's barbarity and enabled an increasing number of people to spoke out for Spain and for freedom. Therefore, and because of her committed and lucid upholding of the Constitution of 1978, we, all democrats, owe your mother an inestimable debt of gratitude. As a victim of terrorism, I felt specially identified with her and represented by her. I will miss her and I will always cherish her in my memory as an example of what Spain should be and what it is able to do.”
