_ Leadership and governance: Debate on the populist and nationalist threat and on economic freedom
FAES organises the 14th edition of the Latin American Visiting Program. Thirty young political representatives from 17 countries of the region have travelled to Madrid to learn about the functioning of the Spanish political, institutional and economic system and to receive training on the exercise of leadership. The program will run until October 2 in collaboration with the Secretary of State for International Cooperation and for Latin America.
The Latin American Visiting Program seeks to promote institutional strengthening and the Rule of Law in Latin America, as well as encourage the exchange of ideas through conferences, seminars and training workshops. During the sessions, the participants and speakers will analyse issues such as leadership, governments and public policies; the threat of populism and nationalism; the relevance of economic freedom, and the opportunities that the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) will offer to Europe, the United States and Latin America. Moreover, they will discuss about the significance of ideas in politics, freedom in the 21st Century, and constitutional consensus and the Spanish Transition as an example to be pursued.
The participants come from Mexico, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Panama, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, Uruguay and Chile. Throughout their stay in Madrid they will engage in institutional visits to the Congress of Deputies and the headquarters of the Presidency of the Community of Madrid, where they will meet the President Cristina Cifuentes, and to the City Council of Madrid, where they will meet the Spokeswoman of the Popular Group there, Esperanza Aguirre. Besides this, they will visit the CEOE and the ‘Financial City’ of the Santander Bank.
