“We are vertiginously going to a crisis of the constitutional system with devastating consequences and the Spaniards have to know it”

The former president of the government and president of FAES, José María Aznar, has assured today that “an alliance of constitutional parties would be the most desirable, but it cannot be headed by the one who is doing the counter-alliance". Asking this morning about his position on the possibility of a patriotic abstention or a constitutionalist coalition as an alternative to the agreement between PSOE and Unidas Podemos, Aznar has stated, "To raise at this moment questions relating to a technical abstention is totally out of reality ".
“The results of the elections are the result of the individual decision of millions of Spaniards, who are responsible for the situation we have”, said Aznar, who insisted that “this should not be forgotten because when making electoral decisions it is very important to try to have some foresight about the consequences, and that this does not serve to extend responsibilities to others”. “We have what we wanted to have. A Congress with 16 parties is a consequence of our decisions freely and democratically taken," he reiterated.
According to his opinion, “Spain has to face an unresolved secessionist process, which has not been properly confronted, has not been defeated and which survives daily in the institutions and affects Spain's credibility. That moment allowed two opportunities: a great constitutional alliance or this coalition of radical socialists, communists and independentists. This formula has been chosen”.
“Does anyone think that Spain's international position is going to be respected, taken into account, or even Spain's positions are going to improve when it has to be explained that those who want to destroy Spain are the ones who are going to condition their government? Do we know what it means to negotiate a government with someone who is convicted of sedition and serving sentences in prison, by a group like Bildu whose leader is a terrorist who has not regretted his crimes”, Aznar has asked journalists questions during an informative breakfast to present the FAES report “The Atlantic Alliance 70 Years Later: From Reform to Rebuilding”.
For President Aznar, "if that is done, we are going to a crisis of the constitutional system with devastating consequences. The Spaniards need to know that if this goes ahead, the system under which we have lived since 1978 is at serious risk. It already is, but it is going to get worse".
At this moment, therefore, “an alliance of constitutional parties would be the most desirable thing. Is it credible that the same person who denied that he was going to make this alliance against Spain's interests and is making it could lead a constitutional alliance against what he is doing now?” “It's a real joke. There are people who have totally lost their respectability, but the rest of us can't fall into that", he added.
Aznar has repeated that “an alliance of constitutional parties would be the most desirable, but it cannot be headed by the one who is doing the counter-alliance”. To raise at this moment questions relating to a technical abstention is totally out of the question, out of reality", added Aznar, who has nevertheless said that “Spain can overcome this situation by taking the right decisions”.
He also referred to the fact that "the unified Spanish centre-right has been a source of stability and democratic guarantee for Spain. Today we are going through a process of fragmentation, which is the rule of the game today in many countries, but how many advantages has Spain so far derived from political fragmentation? Is it possible to have 16 parties in Congress and still say that territorial representation in the Senate needs to be increased?
“What we are experiencing is a process of disintegration. The crisis of the Transition system, of the constitutional system, means the disintegration of the system. The fragmentation of the Congress of Deputies into 16 parties is to put Spain on the brink of cantonalism again”, he pointed out.
Finally, Aznar has considered that “times are different and formulas can be different today. Spain can overcome this situation, and we start by speaking clearly to the Spaniards and explaining what there is, what the risks are, and then looking for instruments to serve a project in the general interest of Spain.
