Roundtable: 'Again, the Atlantic'

04/07/2014. This morning, the 2014 FAES Campus ‘The Atlantic basin: Challenges and Opportunities’ course, directed by Cayetana Álvarez de Toledo, started with a roundtable in which Mikuláš Dzurinda, former Prime Minister and President of Slovakia, and Simon Serfaty, Senior Professor of Zbigniew Brzezinski Chair in Global Security and Geostrategy at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, took part. They were introduced by Charles Powell, Elcano Royal Institute Director, and they addressed the situation of the Transatlantic relations and the future of the Atlantic community.

José María Aznar, former Prime Minister of Spain and President of the FAES Foundation, launched today at the 2014 FAES Campus the A New Atlantic Community: Generating Growth, Human Development and Security in the Atlantic Hemisphere white paper, set in motion by the Atlantic Basin Initiative, chaired and launched by Aznar at the Centre for Transatlantic Relations of the Johns Hopkins University, of which he is a distinguished fellow. 04/07/2014. The 2014 FAES Campus ‘The Atlantic basin: Challenges and Opportunities course’ finished with the roundtable ‘Reestablishing the Atlantic link (I): security and defence’. Oleg Rybachuk, former Ukranian Deputy Prime Minister, Josep Piqué, former Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg, former German Ministry of Defence, took part in it.

Aragón Reyes: “The ‘right to decide’ is unconstitutional and cannot find shelter in any reform”

03/07/2014. This morning, Manuel Aragón Reyes, Professor of Constitutional Law and former Judge of the Spanish Constitutional Court stated at the 2014 FAES Campus that “the euphemistically called ‘right to decide’ is openly unconstitutional and cannot find shelter in any legal reform”. “No constitution permits or can permit the secession of part of a national community just because said part is willing to break away from the rest of the country”, he highlighted during his ‘Constitution and Secession’ address.

Fabra and Aguirre at 2014 FAES Campus

03/07/2014. This morning, the President of the Regional Government of Valencia, Alberto Fabra, took part in the 2014 Campus FAES ‘The Territorial Constitution and the Secessionist Challenge’ course. Fabra, introduced by the Regional President of the PP party in Madrid, Esperanza Aguirre, delivered an address on ‘Spain: Unity, Autonomy and Solidarity’. José María Aznar, President of FAES Foundation, Javier Zarzalejos, Director of FAES Campus, and Ignacio Astarloa, Director of FAES Foundation Constitution and Institutions Department, also participated in the conference.

Barreda: “political determination of enforcing the law is fundamental”

03/07/2014. 2014 FAES Campus devoted a significantly part of the today’s session to the analysis of the nationalists offensives deployed in the Basque Country and Catalonia and to the answers they both deserve. This was respectively conducted by Leopoldo Barreda, Deputy Spokesman of the Popular Parliamentary Group of the Spanish Congress of Deputies, and Francesc de Carreras, professor of Constitutional Law at the Autónoma University of Barcelona.
