Prensa The election of the President of the Republic of Italy

On January 14, Giorgio Napolitano presented his resignation and thus his decision to not serve the remainder of his second term as President of the Italian Republic, which should have ended on 2020; Italy therefore faces from today, the election of a new Head of State. The new Head of the Italian State shall be elected by an electoral body of 1,009 representatives, comprising 630 MPs, 315 senators, six senators-for-life – among who are Mario Monti, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi and Giorgio Napolitano himself – and 58 regional delegates. The election, with secret ballot, will be held in the Chamber of Deputies and the votes will proceed as follows: first the senators, next the MPs and, finally, the regional delegates.

Prensa Competitiveness of the Spanish Economy. Before and After the Crisis (IV). Labour Costs and Improved Competitiveness

As we argued in the previous instalment, inadequate investment in productive capital, technological backwardness and the limited organisational changes that have characterised the Spanish economy, as a result of our productive specialisation, have marked its delay in productivity and losses in competitiveness. And while the restructuring of the productive sectors as a consequence of the crisis, with weight losses both in terms of production and in terms of low-skilled labour intensive sectors, have helped to recover part of competitiveness, the fact is that increased productivity, while an important factor that can help to remain competitive in the long run, is just one of the factors that can explain this improvement, especially when you consider that it has been slow. So we must ask...

Prensa The ‘Umbrella Revolution’ and Civil Disobedience in China

News agency dispatch from Thursday 11 December, 2014: ‘Hong Kong police begun clearing today, after more than two months of occupation, the Admiralty site, the central district of the city, where thousands of people camped beside the seat of the local government demanding true democracy in the former colony.’ A couple of things about the so-called ‘Umbrella Revolution’ – the students demanding democracy and universal suffrage in Hong Kong protected themselves from tear gas fired by the police with umbrellas: hence the name – are worth noting: first, the actions of the People's Republic of China with regard to domestic policy; second, a ‘Manual of disobedience’ that could have consequences in the People's Republic of China. First things first.

Prensa 2015, A Global Economy in Transition

The growth patterns of the global economy after the crisis begin to differ substantially from those we envisaged back in 2009 and which continued during the Great Recession. At that time, we witnessed a decoupling between the damaged developed economies and the thriving emerging economies led by the BRICs, as well as the asymmetric effects caused by a crisis of balance between providers and recipients of capital. At the core of the financial crisis lay an accumulation of unprecedented monetary reserves in the emerging countries as a result of rocketing exports triggered by three decades of continuous gains in productivity and increased exports of raw materials.

Prensa What is at Stake for Spain in the European Constitution's Negotiation?
