Prensa Islamic terrorism and the Balkans

On January 19, the EU ministers for Foreign Affairs met to approve a better coordination for the fight against terrorism. Cooperation in information, in the fight against arms trafficking, or to create a record of airline passengers, has become a priority for European leaders after the Paris attacks. This cooperation includes the Balkan States but has probably arrived too late for two main reasons: 1st) the Bosnian war (1992-1995) served to introduce in Europe the Arab volunteers – mujahideen (holy warriors) – who would later act as terrorists. Several of the fanatics who perpetrated the 9/11 attacks, including Osama Bin Laden, had the Bosnian passport. 2nd) Bosnia and Kosovo are currently recruiting centres and, along with Macedonia and Albania, are used as a transit route to...

Prensa 2015, A Global Economy in Transition

The growth patterns of the global economy after the crisis begin to differ substantially from those we envisaged back in 2009 and which continued during the Great Recession. At that time, we witnessed a decoupling between the damaged developed economies and the thriving emerging economies led by the BRICs, as well as the asymmetric effects caused by a crisis of balance between providers and recipients of capital. At the core of the financial crisis lay an accumulation of unprecedented monetary reserves in the emerging countries as a result of rocketing exports triggered by three decades of continuous gains in productivity and increased exports of raw materials.

Prensa The Islamism to Come

The editor and cartoonists at Charlie Hebdo surely believed that publishing cartoons of Muhammad disowning the jihadists of the ISIS or Islamic State was an obligation to defend the sacred liberal principle of freedom of expression. I don't think they realised that, in fact, they were sticking their head out of the trenches of the civilizational war between modernity and barbarism which, in the end, is what they have died for. The issue is that, in Europe, we still refuse to understand the nature of the threat that we're facing. This is not about publishing or not some satirical images, but about thinking or not that Allah is our God and Muhammad its prophet. As we have seen ever since the Islamic State launched its offensive on Iraq, back in June, what awaits unbelievers is clear and...

Prensa Competitiveness of the Spanish Economy. Before and after the crisis (III). Is a sustained growth of competitiveness possible? Arguments based on Total Factor Productivity

Before the performance of apparent productivity of labour, which in some countries, including Spain, is enhanced by a simple economic downturn, one could also wonder about Total Factor Productivity (TFP), also called Multifactor Productivity, which measures the technological efficiency of the economy. A positive development would send signals that the improvement of competitiveness could be sustainable in the long term.
