Prensa Ukraine, between Russia and the European Union

“For Russia, Ukraine is crucial in a historical way, in a psychological way (they call it “Little Russia”) and, above all, in a political, economic and strategic way. More importantly, Ukraine is a key country for Russia’s national security”“The battle on the streets of Kiev, which has already claimed many lives and thousands of wounded, is a tragic fact which might lead to a civil war. Ukraine’s army is the largest in Europe after the Russian and can be deployed at any moment”“Vladimir Putin’s strategy regarding Ukraine is the same than that regarding other countries of the former Soviet Union: an indirect control. Russia does not intend to govern Ukraine. But it wants a “negative” control: that Ukraine does not do what Russia does not want it to do”

Prensa S.O.S. Venezuela: internal unity and foreign aid

The episodes of violence which have occurred in Venezuela and which have claimed the lives of several students these days have highlighted the collapse of a model which is unable to manage any of the essential functions of government, and which besides imposes terror on the streets in order to stop the social protests generated by its impotence.

Prensa Hollande’s visit and relations between France and the United States

It is interesting to see how French President François Hollande’s first state visit to the United States has become the subject of gossip and protocol headaches due to his recent separation from France’s first lady. However, news on couché paper conceal a deeper debate on an alliance which has had its ups and downs over time and has not always maintained such a good health, which has led the President of the United States to treat the French President with such deference, including a gala dinner at the White House and a visit to President Jefferson’s home.

Prensa The First Spanish Republic, 1873-1874. A bad memory

The First Spanish Republic was proclaimed on 11 February 1873. It was not established due to a big wave of opinion, or the duty of a well-established party in the country, but to the manoeuvres of royalist parties which King Amadeus of Savoy was unable to neutralize and which made his continuity on the throne unviable. The (federal) Republican Party, which had been founded in November 1868 and had won appreciable parliamentary representation in the following elections, would only decline since then. “Nobody has destroyed the Spanish Monarchy, nobody has killed it; the Monarchy has died due to internal decomposition”, would state the republican Emilio Castelar.

Prensa Ukraine's Crisis

On January 22, the protests against the Ukrainian government claimed the lives of three victims according to official sources or five according to the opposition. The sorrowful fact is tragically ironic because it happened on the Day of National Unity which celebrates the independence achieved in 1919. But there are at least two more paradoxes.
