/10.10.13/.- José María Aznar, former Prime Minister and president of FAES Foundation, has sent a letter to the widow of Wilfried Martens, Mrs Smet, to convey his condolences on the death of the President of the European People's Party and former Prime Minister of Belgium, Wilfried Martens. Aznar stressed in the letter that "he was an exemplary man and politician, whose hard work and vision roused the admiration of those who were privileged enough to know and treat him."
/08.10.13/.- The journal Cuadernos de Pensamiento Político, published by FAES Foundation and directed by Javier Zarzalejos, its secretary general, celebrates its tenth anniversary with the publication of its 40th issue. Juan José Linz died last Tuesday in New Haven (USA). He was the most important Spanish figure of international Political Science. Linz was born in Germany to a Spanish mother and a German father but was raised in Spain. His studies were conducted at the University of Madrid from where he went to the United States as a graduate trainee in 1950. His intention was to attend the New School for Social Research where Hannah Arendt was working and who, a year later, in 1951, published the three volumes of her very famous The Origins of Totalitarianism.
/05.10.13./- Miguel Marín, Director of Economy and Public Policies of FAES Foundation, participated on Saturday, October 4 in the seminar on fiscal federalism held jointly by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and Manuel Giménez Abad Foundation in Altea (Alicante). Marín took part in the panel “Toward a European Fiscal Union: Consequences for the National Fiscal System”, where he stated that Europe is not ready yet for fiscal union and that its debate paralyses others which are necessary, such as the banking union one. In this respect, he suggested not to take more steps in this direction without consolidating the previous ones.
Pedro Passos Coelho's arrival in office took place after the failure of the socialist government led by José Socrates. The country's chaotic financial situation forced the then prime minister to resign in 2010 after parliament rejected his fourth austerity plan.
