Prensa EPA 2014, Third Quarter: Sharp Drop in Unemployment

The National Institute of Statistics (INE) has just published the results of the Labour Force Survey (LFS) for the third quarter of this year. The headlines are known by all: employment grew by 151,000 people in the quarter and unemployment fell by 195,200 people, resulting in a drop in the 24% unemployment rate for the first time since the end of 2011, in particular down to 23.67%.

The dissolution of the Euro-sceptic group in the European Parliament EFDD (Europe of Freedom and Direct Democracy), the spokesman of which is Nigel Farage, leader of Britain's UKIP (UK Independence Party) was communicated on Wednesday October 15th. The cause was Latvian MEP Iveta Grigule's exit from the group to join the ECR group (European Conservatives and Reformists). This excluded the EFDD of the benefits of being a distinct political group in Parliament by not complying with the requirement of national diversity, needing representatives of at least seven different countries.

The last elections to the regional parliament of Thuringia of September 14 are having more important consequences for German politics than expected at first. Despite the predictable victory of the candidate of the CDU (Christian Democratic Union) and current Minister-President of the region, Christine Lieberknecht, with 33. 5% of the vote – a 2. 2% increase on the 2009 elections – the strong emergence of the party Alternative for Germany (AfD) with 11 seats has led to the departure of the Liberal Party (FDP) from Parliament. The FDP has lost the 7 seats it had won on the last term, which has complicated the formation of the future regional government, to the point that it could imply the CDU moving to the opposition in the Thuringian Landtag for the first time.

The great surprise of the Portuguese elections held on 25 May to elect the European Parliament came from António Marinho e Pinto. The former Chairman of the Bar Association deployed an anti-corruption and anti-party speech in these elections, wrapped in deepening participatory democracy, which has given the MPT (da Terra Party), a hitherto tiny 'centrist, ruralist and nationalist' party, two seats in the European Parliament. Never before had this party attained such electoral performance: it reached more than 7% of the vote.

Prensa Labour Reform in Italy: Developments and Paradoxes

In recent weeks Italian political life has revolved around the package of measures – called 'Jobs Act' – that the government led by Matteo Renzi intends to pass to fight unemployment. Unemployment is one of Italy's major problems and no government has managed to address it adequately in recent years. According to the latest figures published in August, the overall unemployment rate is 12.3%. But the greatest Italian labour problem continues to be youth unemployment (under 25 years), reaching a rate of 44.2% and which is threatening to leave a whole generation out of the labour market.
