Prensa Aznar expresses his sadness and consternation at the death of Wilfried Martens

/10.10.13/.- José María Aznar, former Prime Minister and president of FAES Foundation, has sent a letter to the widow of Wilfried Martens, Mrs Smet, to convey his condolences on the death of the President of the European People's Party and former Prime Minister of Belgium, Wilfried Martens. Aznar stressed in the letter that "he was an exemplary man and politician, whose hard work and vision roused the admiration of those who were privileged enough to know and treat him."

Prensa Cuadernos de Pensamiento Político Celebrates its 10th Anniversary

/08.10.13/.- The journal Cuadernos de Pensamiento Político, published by FAES Foundation and directed by Javier Zarzalejos, its secretary general, celebrates its tenth anniversary with the publication of its 40th issue. In the editor’s note that introduces the issue, FAES claims that “the Spanish Constitution cannot integrate more arbitrary identity accounts without inevitably compromising the political principle from which it emanates and which confers meaning and legitimacy to it”.Read the Editorial | Article by Fernández Bereijo

Prensa Juan José Linz Storch de Gracia (24 December 1926-1 October 2013), in memoriam

Juan José Linz died last Tuesday in New Haven (USA). He was the most important Spanish figure of international Political Science. Linz was born in Germany to a Spanish mother and a German father but was raised in Spain. His studies were conducted at the University of Madrid from where he went to the United States as a graduate trainee in 1950. His intention was to attend the New School for Social Research where Hannah Arendt was working and who, a year later, in 1951, published the three volumes of her very famous The Origins of Totalitarianism.

/27.09.13/.- José María Aznar participated on Friday, September 27 in the Annual Concordia Summit in New York, where he stated that “Europe needs more sources of growth to create employment.” Aznar particularly referred to “four pillars of an economic nature but of great political importance”: a real banking union, the free trade and investment agreement with the United States, the deepening in the single European market and the development of a common energy policy.

Desde su inicio, la Unión Europea ha adoptado sus decisiones por consenso y respetando el equilibrio de los intereses de todos. Este afán se plasma en un sistema político-institucional sui generis en el que los Tratados atribuyen el poder legislativo, judicial y ejecutivo entre las diversas instituciones comunitarias. Dentro del entramado institucional comunitario, el Consejo desempeña un papel fundamental, puesto que es co-legislador y autoridad presupuestaria junto con el Parlamento Europeo. Además, el Consejo está llamado a ejercer un papel cada vez mayor en la definición de la política exterior de la Unión Europea y realiza una labor fundamental en la preparación de las reuniones del Consejo Europeo, verdadero vértice político de la Unión Europea. La forma en que el Consejo adopta sus decisiones está también diseñada para conseguir el consenso y mantener el equilibrio de poderes. Hasta ahora, el Consejo ha adoptado sus decisiones mediante el denominado sistema de voto ponderado.
