Who killed Joseba Pagazaurtundúa? Why? What for? We few, we happy few, we band of brothers, shall never forget. But there are many people in Spain with a short memory and a weak spirit. Joseba was murdered by the dark cohorts of those who now govern in Andoain, in San Sebastian and in so many other towns of the Basque Country. They killed him because of his untainted defence of Spain as a nation of free and equal citizens. They wanted to spread suffering across society in order to defeat democracy; in order to defeat a political order that Spaniards had thought necessary and together had made possible. On January 19, the EU ministers for Foreign Affairs met to approve a better coordination for the fight against terrorism. Cooperation in information, in the fight against arms trafficking, or to create a record of airline passengers, has become a priority for European leaders after the Paris attacks. The editor and cartoonists at Charlie Hebdo surely believed that publishing cartoons of Muhammad disowning the jihadists of the ISIS or Islamic State was an obligation to defend the sacred liberal principle of freedom of expression. I don't think they realised that, in fact, they were sticking their head out of the trenches of the civilizational war between modernity and barbarism which, in the end, is what they have died for. On 4 December, Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed the citizens of his country in his traditional speech on the state of the nation. This annual address, which can be divided into three parts – Economy, Foreign and Defence Policy – is intended primarily for the Russian people and describes the medium-term strategy of the Kremlin. According to the Russian President, the next four or five years are going to be very difficult and critical for Russia. Given the popular belief that the Russians are a nation of survivors who thrive in difficult situations and never give up, Putin proclaimed that they must face the challenges and win and, presenting himself as the only man capable of ensuring the stability of country, proposed 'not waste a good crisis like this one.'
